Why Do Horses Fart When Mating

If you have been around horses enough, you are probably well aware of their tendency to fart a lot. If you have ever been around horses when they are mating, you might want to wear your gas mask. This is because it is very common for horses to fart when mating. In today’s article, we are going to discuss this behavior and explain exactly why horses fart so much when mating.

Why do horses fart so much?

Horses generally have a lot of gas because of their diet. Since they are herbivores, they eat large quantities of plants which are very high in fibers. The only way to digest fiber is by a process called fermentation. A horse’s digestive system undergoes fermentation while breaking down the plants, and the main byproduct of fermentation is gas. The gas then builds up in the colon until it is released through the rectum.

Why do horses fart when mating?

The reason horses fart when mating is because their digestive system is located at the end of their torso near the butt. The main digestive organ (the colon) is where food is broken down, which is located very close to the horse’s rectum. When horses mate, their lower torso is very active (whether they have a penis or vagina). Since the colon is also located near a horse’s sexual organs, it is also stimulated while horses mate. This stimulation can easily cause the built up gas in the colon to be released as farts. You can get a better picture of this by looking at the picture of a Horse’s Digestive System Below.

Is there a way to stop a horse from farting so much?

Unfortunately, there is really no way to stop a horse from farting so much. However, there is really no need to worry because a horse farting is very natural and is almost always a result of their high fiber diet. If your horse suddenly starts farting more than usual, there is a chance there is something wrong with his/her digestive system. Sometimes, a damaged colon will result in a horse farting a lot.
